Making Wishes #30 Penny Art

Inspiration: The inspiration for this piece came from thinking about the penny and how it could be incorporated into the work. I kept coming back to wishing wells and fountains, tossing in pennies for wishes. I like the idea that something as mundane as a penny can still carry a little bit of magic. The koi entered the picture when I started making sketches for the piece. I liked the way the colors would play between the koi and the penny, which is basically how it all came together.

About the Art: I believe that every art work reveals something about the artist.

The significance of the number: There isn’t a lot of significance to the #30 other than the fact that I’m turning 30 this year and I have a lot of wishes for myself for this coming year.

Materials: I was inspired as far as the technique by the artist Brittney Lee. She does beautiful illustrations, as well as cut paper art. I used this as way to experiment with the medium. Almost the whole thing is made out of cut pieces of paper. The hardest part was cutting the “ripples” out of a white rice paper that I found. It’s very delicate and easily rips.

Specifically I used: paper, craft glue, rubber cement, paint.

Size: 6 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: Leyna Haller is a filmmaker and illustrator working in Ohio.

The Couponers Begin Their Work: 79% Savings

Those that are hard core couponers have a very different perspective than most people that go shopping. Most people would be proudly telling every person they know if they were able to make a food purchase that was almost 80% off retail price. Holly at Mommies With Cents did her first shopping run for Penny Experiment and announced that “this week was a bit of a disappointment” because she managed only a 79% savings on the food that she purchased.

safeway grocery store receipt

Holly was able to purchase $13.96 for $3.47. This means that Penny Experiment has now spent $3.89 while purchasing $76.73 worth of food for food banks. Another baby step toward the goal of $1 million worth of food for food banks from a single penny found on the ground.

Pengins #42 Penny Art

PenginsChristine Shinn

Pengins penny art

Pengins penny art back

Inspiration: I was watching penguins on Dirty Jobs and I had this temporary fixation of them at the time. It could be the weather. It also reminded me of how people are introduced to them as kids, hence “Pengins”, not Penguins.

About the Art: A contrast of the utter cold and stark, with the utter bright and warm. Besides, penguins make good art.

The significance of the number: RIP Douglas Adams, you did great work.

Materials: Artist’s gesso board, acrylic, sharpie, and penny, of course.

Size: 6 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: I like doing stuff that interests me. What is it? Just anything that is new and different to old and traditional. There has to be an interesting aspect to things, but not same old run of the mill. There, I’ve told you everything, and it denotes nothing. Basically, give it a try. Give it a go. At least once. You know you want to.

Penny For Your Thoughts Book #9

I am still looking for people to launch Penny For Your Thoughts books (still plenty of numbers available). The following should make it perfectly obvious why I’m looking for others to participate in launching “Penny For Your Thoughts” books since it is so much more appealing than what I put together:

Penny For Your Thoughts book 9

Cindy McMath (who also participated in making postcard art) at Pink Bird Studio has done a wonderful job putting together book number 9 which she will be launching to a number of people that have already commented on the post that they want the book to come to them.

I was truly moved when I read about the book she chose to use for this project:

This blank book belonged to my dear friend Andrea Marrs who passed away last May. It was marked with my name on it in her art room for me to take and do something with. It has sat in my cabinet for over a year waiting for the “right” project, and this is it. So Book #9 is dedicated to Andrea (I think she’d be pleased).

Cindy also chose to put her own page in the book before sending it out into the world:

penny for your thoughts grateful

I can’t wait to see what is added when it finally makes its way back to me.

Create Change #46 Penny Art

Create ChangeCindy McMath

Create Change penny art

Create Change penny art side

Create Change penny art back

Inspiration: We have the ability to create change for the better in the world around us. The Penny Experiment is a great example of this.

About the Art: I’ve used a magical-looking letter carrier as the main image – a nod to my love of mail art (and fitting for a mail art project).

The significance of the number: I chose the number 46 – my age if you must know!

Materials: I used a vintage bingo card as my substrate (my favourite postcard material). I covered it with a thin coat of gesso, but I masked off the number 46 so it would stand out a bit. I painted the prepared card with fluid acrylics, stamped flourishes with permanent ink and then adhered the collage elements. A vintage rub-on alphabet was used for the words.

Size: 6 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: Cindy McMath lives in Victoria, BC Canada. She has dabbled in many art and craft forms, but it was paper arts that “stuck” after she made her first set of handmade Christmas cards in 1989.

With a busy day job, Cindy does not normally sell her work; however her work has been published in a number of books and magazines, including “Somerset Studio”, “Collaborative Art Journals and Shared Visions in Mixed Media”, “Cloth Paper Scissors” and “Artist Trading Cards, an Anthology of ATCs”.

If you’re curious to find out more information about Cindy’s artwork, you can visit her personal blog at Pink Bird Studio and her gallery at Picture trail

Penny Gift #45 Penny Art

Penny Gift — Janet Heritage

Penny Gift penny art

Penny Gift penny art side

Penny Gift penny art back

Inspiration / About the Art: I am a “mail artist” (occasionally) and what I have tended to do is find someone (a friend or relative) and kind of focus on sending them a whole bunch of cool stuff in their mail box all at once (or whenever the spirit moves me) Just fill the mailbox with cool, gorgeous artwork.

It makes me feel good to know that my mail art “RAK” (Random Act of Kindness) can really change the way a person feels about their day because when they go to the mailbox, instead of finding a bunch of junk mail and bills, they instead find all this magical artwork that has been made especially for them.

Size: 6 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: Janet Heritage is a mixed-media /assemblage artist. She was born and raised in Seattle, and currently lives on the outskirts of Denver, Colorado with her husband, Tim, and her 2 rescued/shelter puppies, “Star” and “Blueberry.”

She has been in love with the arts in one way or another all of her life. After securing her degree in communication, she sang professionally in nightclubs, acted onstage in and with a touring children’s theatre group, and was an actress in many television commercials. She then travelled to England and France, and it was there that she found her love of the visual arts begin to surface.

Since then, Janet’s artwork has been framed, exhibited, published and recognized by both private and corporate collectors. She is drawn to the emerging book arts movement, and has taught workshops on creative art techniques, journal writing and altered bookmaking.

She loves to play with bright colors, rich textures and found objects. Her studio is chalk-full of inspiring art supplies and she is never happier than when she is creating. Lately, Janet has been kind of a “green queen” and has been challenging herself to use materials that are otherwise destined for a landfill. She scours garage sales, flea markets, and antique malls for ephemera, vintage jewellery, and beautiful paper.

78 RPM #78 Penny Art

78 RPMDave Bois

78 RPM penny art

78 RPM penny art back

Inspiration: Math and numbers can be intimidating, but they can also be big fun and provide a source of meaning. I was delighted to have been randomly assigned the number 78. While my first thought was of the year 1978, I abandoned that in favor of focusing on the number of RPMs at which the really old phonograph records spun.

About the Art: This piece is pretty reflective of the stuff that I do: an illustration style rooted in my fondness for the comic arts, a wee bit of visual punning, and a deep interest in music and math (geometry in particular). I have no idea why the image of John Cusack in “Say Anything” appeared, but I decided to have a bit of fun with the fact that well before the all-but-archaic boom box, there was the Victrola. The penny is also a 1978 penny.

The significance of the number: In addition to 78 being the number of revolutions per minute of the super old school records, it dawned on me that 13, itself a very powerful and meaning-rich number, goes into 78 six times. I chose to represent that half-dozen thirteens as the vertices of an octahedron. Although musical time signatures are conceptually closer to fractions, I do rely on the odd-meter 7/8 time signature to capture “78,” lending additional support to the 78 RPM concept.

Materials: paper and card-stock, ink, colored pencil, crayon, pencil, collage.

Size: 5 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: Dave Bois lives in Oakland, CA.

Mayan Calendar #12 Penny Art

Mayan CalendarJennifer Bohdonnah

Penny art 12

Penny art 12 back

Inspiration: With the knowledge of the Mayan Calendar date in mind, the “Penny Experiment” is a great example of how collective, compassionate, positive intentions can manifest into something that creates healing and love for all.

About the Art: This spherical post card represents our solar system. The gold background, represents our sun and within the sphere, a labyrinth center with 9 smaller circles representing our planets coming into alignment on 12/21/12.

Mercury is the 1st small gold sphere, followed by the # 1 sphere representing Venus. (The planet Venus is also known as the feminine planet. She is given the #1 considering that female nurturing and compassion is greatly needed to heal our fragile planet earth at this time.) The 3rd metallic mirror circle represents Earth. This piece is meant to allow us, the viewer, to reflect on ourselves, our intentions and our actions at this monumental time for all. The center lotus represents COMPLETE balance and harmony. This is where the copper penny is to be placed. It represents the red planet Mars (also known as the male planet.) Balance is greatly needed for male and female creatures to live harmoniously as ONE. The next gold circle represents Jupiter, followed by Saturn, the ringed~planet (a 2nd metallic mirror circle is placed here to reflect the number 12, creating the illusion: 12, 21, 12 and infinity…) Next, is Uranus as the #2 circle (evenly spaced apart from circle #1 to create the balance and reflect the number 12 as previously described.) Neptune is the next small gold circle and finally Pluto, the small red circle completing our solar system as we know it.

The labyrinth I created seemed most appropriate to represent our solar system, as the labyrinth is a place to meditate, contemplate and reactivate our DNA. It is a belief that as the Mayan calendar comes to an end, we, as human beings will shed our old way of thinking and of destroying our planet. As we move into a higher consciousness also known as the ‘Age of Aquarius’, humanity will ‘wake up’ and heal ourselves, heal our planet and unconditionally love one another and all creatures known and unknown.

The significance of the number: As the end of the Mayan calendar approaches, I felt a strong urge to create a conscious piece of art with the number ’12’ conveyed within the piece; The end date of the Mayan calendar is known to be ~ 12/21/12.

Size: 6 inches x 6 inches

About the Artist: Jennifer Bohdonnah, an artist, muralist, writer, teacher & traveler has ‘created’ internationally for 20 years. She brings to life, bold, colorful pieces of art and unique stories that convey a love for nature, animals & a connection with all that is.

“I believe color, life and a interconnectedness between subjects should be expressed with love through my creative endeavors,” she says. “I want viewers to see with their hearts and be open to a love for all that we see on earth including ourselves.” The unique, whimsical paintings & stories enable people to feel the beauty, compassion & vibrancy Bohdonnah shares.

Jennifer Bohdonnah, who was born in New York, attended the Fashion Institute, NYC & has lived in Boulder, CO for 18 years where she received her fine arts degree from The University of Colorado.

She continues to create around the world; presently, residing between Branford, CT & The West Indies.
