3 Holds 6 / All Holds 1 #36 Penny Postcard Art

3 Holds 6 / All Holds 1Shelley Miller

36

36 back

Inspiration / About the Art: I’m not a big believer in astrology or numerology, but I love the imagery and stories they contain. I researched the symbolism of the number 36 and the following grabbed me :

* According to R. Allendy, it is the ratio of the individual Karma, 6, to the organization of the Universe, 30, and the cosmic solidarity which results from it in the natural cycles.

* J. Boehme associates it with the “angelic world” because it is the sum of the eight firsts numbers. In the other words, it is the number of the sky.

* The Chinese astrology counts 36 beneficial stars and 72 malefic stars, their sum gives the sacred number 108.

Significance of the Number: The mother’s head, neck and left arm form a “3” (universe). The blanket wrapping the baby forms a “6” (individual). The stars are the 36 beneficial stars.

Materials: Cardboard, ink, acrylic paint

Size: 5 inches x 8 inches

Hope #92 Penny Postcard Art

HopeAmy Lowright

hope penny art

hope penny art back

Inspiration / About the Art: I find it intriguing that as children — and even into adulthood — we make wishes on things such as pennies and dandelions. I’ve always wondered why we put our hope in these small, seemingly random objects. I find Penny Experiment appropriate and inspiring toward this as we are using these pennies as hope for a positive change.

Materials: I used watercolor and collage (newspaper, sewing pattern paper, cotton, masking tape) on illustration board, and sealed it with a pouring medium.

Size: 5 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: Amy currently lives in Boulder, Colorado doing freelance illustration and design. You can see more of her work at AmyLowright.com.

The Year Of The Tiger #83 Penny Postcard Art

Year of the Tiger — Ashley Van Meter

year of the tiger penny art

year of the tiger penny art back

Inspiration: Penny Experiment has shown me and others that it is possible to take “nothing” and make something deep and valuable out of it.

This project risked embarrassment, failure, wasting time and probably plenty of other things that none of us have even considered. 2010 – the Year of the Tiger – begins February 14, 2010. According to the Chinese zodiac, this particular year will be the Metal Tiger. The element of metal helps with steely decisiveness and the Tiger gives courage to step up to risks. That is why I feel this piece is appropriate.

I hope that people can step up and take a risk this year by purchasing pieces of this Penny Experiment art.

About the Art: I took a major risk in stepping into this project. I have a great fear of deadlines, as I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my art. I used the Tiger’s persistent yet careful energy to complete it. I was also born in the Year of the Tiger (1986)

Materials: Paper primed on back with gesso, Ink, Acrylic, Pastel, Colored Pencil, Spray Paint. Sealed with gloss medium.

Size: 5 inches x 6 inches

About the Artist: Ashley is from Seattle, WA. This area is beautiful with the mountains, ocean and wildlife. The rain makes everything flourish. I have a strong appreciation for color and life. I appreciate bold lines and vibrant colors. In my art, I want people to see the beauty in everyday life.

Zero Is Where The Real Fun Starts #70 Penny Postcard Art

Zero Is Where The Real Fun StartsMichi Lantz

zero fun penny art

zero fun penny art back

Inspiration: I have been at the point of having nothing (zero) and being forced to tell my children to eat as much of the free school lunch they could. I told them because I didn’t know whether I could have dinner on the table or not, or even manage to keep our home. The void I felt was vast and dark for a long time, but it was also where my new beginning and hope was born. I received tremendous compassion from people I didn’t know who I never thought would help me. So when Penny Art Experiment was introduced to me, it came full circle. I am able to give back something to someone else that had been given to me in my dark hour: help, love and a sense of passing compassion on. Even when life seems without light and one has nothing (zero), it is there in that creation point — in the void — where extraordinary situations can come alive. One step at the time, with something as physically small like a penny, great things can enter one’s life to benefit others.

About the Art: I was trying to capture the simple, humble and yet extraordinary powerful act of giving. We are given life, we are given guidance, we are given the power to share and to do it freely. That is one of the Graces, and it flows constantly through Universe and our lives

The significance of the number: The number seven (7) is a holy number, a number for creation, a life force. It is a numeric symbol for soul and for Universe, a spiritual dimension of life which only can be experienced, and it’s combined with body and earth which is the physical dimension of life which we all live. The number zero (0) is a void and the title refers to the Sufi mystic and poet Rumi, who wrote about humanity and our relationship with God and how we all are interconnected with everything and how that our lives are constantly created and re-created in the great cosmic web.

Materials: digital

Size: 5 inches x 7 inches

About the Artist: You will be able to find more information about Michi and her artwork/photography soon. She’s in the process of launching her website, Michi Lantz Photography. Michi also works with archetypal symbolic language and will have her spiritual work on another website in the process of launching – Ministry of Archetypes. . You can connect with her at her Facebook profile – Michi Lantz.

Madame Deals Delivers Food

One of the things that I am happy about with Penny Experiment is that food is being delivered to a lot of local food banks all over the country by the couponers. Madame Deals took their first load of groceries that they purchased for Penny Experiment to the Monticello Area Community Action Agency or MACAA:

food bank delivery

Not only are the couponers helping their local communities, they are also learning more about them:

I had the pleasure of meeting with one of our loyal followers, Mary, for coffee last week. Mary informed of the extreme poverty in certain areas of Fluvanna county. I had never been to the towns she spoke of. I really had no idea of the poor conditions that some people live in right in our backyards.

The only unfortunate part of the trip was that MACAA wasn’t able to take one of the items that Madame Deals had purchased for them. Their facility only had a freezer so they were unable to accept refrigerated food like yogurt. So we have adjusted down the totals to reflect that Madame Deals purchased $90.42 worth of food for $12.80 instead of $95.32 worth of food for only $13.70. That means that the revised totals of what we have been able to buy for food banks is $387.99 worth of food for $35.83.

Although these are just the first baby steps, I’m so happy to see that the found penny has been able to deliver as much food as it has been able to thus far with hopefully a lot more to come.

Amity #23 Penny Postcard Art

AmityKristal Garcia

Amity penny art

Amity penny art back

Inspiration: Tarot cards, specifially the ace and six of pentacles. A pentacle is a symbol of the world and bringing heaven to earth in tarot. The hand is offering this symbol (the penny/pentacle) to a woman who is “broken”. The scale ( a symbol of equality) is taken from the six of pentacles, where a man is giving away part of his fortune to those in need in order to balance the scale.

About the Art: I read tarot cards, not because I believe that they will tell me the future, but beacuse they allow me to sort my thoughts and answer my own questions. The use of tarot cards in my piece is a way of expressing my belief in the duality of things in life. Tarot can be considered as a taboo in our society and is often assumed to be occult. By using it in this piece,I’m sharing something that helps me in hopes that the artwork containing it will help others. The tattooed hand symbolises stereotypes and the idea that an act of kindness can come from anyone, including those you might not expect it from.

The significance of the number: 23 is a combination of 10, signifying wholeness and perfection and 13, a taboo number that is considered lucky by some.

Materials: Collage and ink.

Size: 4 inches x 6 inches

About the Artist: If you would like to know more about Kristal’s work, you can see more on her deviant art page ~Kristal-Marie
