Amity — Kristal Garcia
Inspiration: Tarot cards, specifially the ace and six of pentacles. A pentacle is a symbol of the world and bringing heaven to earth in tarot. The hand is offering this symbol (the penny/pentacle) to a woman who is “broken”. The scale ( a symbol of equality) is taken from the six of pentacles, where a man is giving away part of his fortune to those in need in order to balance the scale.
About the Art: I read tarot cards, not because I believe that they will tell me the future, but beacuse they allow me to sort my thoughts and answer my own questions. The use of tarot cards in my piece is a way of expressing my belief in the duality of things in life. Tarot can be considered as a taboo in our society and is often assumed to be occult. By using it in this piece,I’m sharing something that helps me in hopes that the artwork containing it will help others. The tattooed hand symbolises stereotypes and the idea that an act of kindness can come from anyone, including those you might not expect it from.
The significance of the number: 23 is a combination of 10, signifying wholeness and perfection and 13, a taboo number that is considered lucky by some.
Materials: Collage and ink.
Size: 4 inches x 6 inches
