Seeds Of Change #47 Penny Postcard Art

Seeds Of ChangeBrandi Crye

seeds of change

seas of change back

Inspiration / About the Art: I wanted to add elements of jewlery making to the postcard, that’s where the wire and beads came from. The idea was for it to have a kinda sewn look to it. The penny I used I actually found in my hall closet the day I decided I was going to make the art piece (I still don’t know where that penny came from).

The size of the postcard came from a star wars postcard that just happened to be on top of my computer. I knew from the moment that thought about joining this project that the piece would have flowers.

Truth is this project something personal for me. I know what it’s like to have to rely on foodboxes.. To use soup kitchens. To rely on the kindness of others. Having been there it only makes sense to help now that I can. When I saw this project on twitter I was was like “that’s an awesome idea, where do I sign up!”

Significance of the Number: A bad tattoo when I was 15. It was suppose to be 42 (I admit I’m a book geek!) but the boyfriend at the time got “creative” and the tattoo appeared to look more like the number 47. I have never lived it down even after I got another badly done tattoo over it! So much for trying to hide from my past.

Materials: cardstock, ink, paint, mesh, wire, beads, and copper

Size: 6 inches x 4 inches

About the Artist: Brandi Crye is an artist of many forms. Considered a “Crafty Queen” locally for all her designing. Jewelry, paper goods, and mixed-media art seem to devour most of her time in her small (and I mean tiny) apartment in Eugene, OR.

You can learn more about Brandi at her website Crye’s Creations. You can also Follow her on twitter @darkworlds.

It’s always exciting for me to welcome a new couponer who has decided to participate in Penny Experiment because that means another person getting great deals for their local food bank. I think she summed her shopping trip up best:

So, by combining manufacturers coupons with sale items and store savings, I got 8 boxes of cereal, 4 boxes of granola bars, 5 cans of tuna and 1 box of pancake mix for what it costs to buy 1 can of tuna at regular price!

Unleash Change #19 Penny Postcard Art

Unleash ChangeUnderground Concepts

unleash change

unleash change back

Inspiration / About the Art: The inspiration for this piece is that we humans and mimes alike need to unleash preconceived notions to change the world. The red balloons signify all the mental blocks and restraints being let go.

Significance of the Number: 19 is a rather small number in the spectrum to 100, which signifies that even little changes, and unleashing generosity, can have a massive effect.

Materials: We created this piece by taking a photo of 3 mimes unleashing 19 red balloons into a cold winter day, then amped up the contrast and other image effects. After that we transposed the photo onto a grunge background and then erased bits and pieces of the background to create what you see. All the manipulation was done in Photoshop.

Size: 5 inches x 7 inches

About the Artist: Underground Concepts are a troupe of actors hailing from all around Idaho and Washington who currently specialize and perform mime acts and shows. They combine the century old art of mime and mix it with modern miming, then combine theater, dancing, acrobatics, statue, staff manipulation and several other arts all into one to produce something completely unique. Their costumes strictly follow the black and white tradition of the mime and then take off on a whole new path adding in Gothic, Victorian, steam punk and military elements creating a character as unique as their performances. Underground Concepts appear in various places all around the year, so keep a watchful eye as they may be in your neighborhood next week.

You can learn more about Underground Concepts at their website UndergroundConcepts.net. You can also Follow them on twitter @Undrgrnd_cncpts.

MoneyMate Kate First Purchase Is $45.90 For $0.00

It’s great to welcome another couponer that has decided to participate in Penny Experiment. Kate who writes the personal finance blog MoneyMate Kate (be sure to check out her informative post Supermarket Couponing for Non Couponers) took full advantage of CVS policies and coupons to purchase 10 boxes of Kellogg’s cereal with a retail value of $45.90 for free:

kelloggs

Kate was worried that she wouldn’t be able to participate in Penny Experiment because she wanted to give the food directly to families that she knows are in need of extra food due to their current financial situations. The whole theme of Penny Experiment has been to use creativity to help others and although the food is not technically going to a food bank, it is going to families that would likely use a food bank if it were more readily available to them, and that fits the criteria in my opinion.

The 10 Kellogg’s cereal boxes will be added to the master list of all the food purchased for Penny Experiment. If you are a couponer, we are always looking for more couponers to participate and always appreciate those that decide to help in any way they can.

Couponers have now purchased $716.86 worth of food for $72.97 which means we now only have $999,283.14 left to go…

Another Milestone #50 Penny Postcard Art

Another MilestoneKatherine Thomas

penny art marbles

another milestone back

Inspiration / About the Art: I chose a collection of marbles to portray this number, because 50 is a common milestone, and marbles are beautiful stones. In honor of the original 100 pennies in the Penny Experiment, there are 100 marbles in this piece. Each one is unique, and each offers its own special contribution to the group. Much like people: each of us is unique, and each offers something special to the group.

Significance of the Number: The number 50 was chosen for personal reasons. I will reluctantly turn 50 soon, and am struggling with the usual mid-life uncertainty. But, participating in the Penny Experiment has given me confidence and a new sense of purpose. I am so glad to be part of this project!

Materials: Colored Pencil

Size: 5 inches x 5 inches

About the Artist: Katherine Thomas is a teacher and enjoys working with colored pencil.

You can see and learn more about Katherine’s work at her blog Katherine Thomas. You can also contact her by email and follow her on twitter under the name @BeKatherine

Penny For Your Thoughts Book #6 Launched

With all that has been going on, I haven’t been able to spend a whole lot of time promoting the Penny For Your Thoughts books that I have asked people to launch. Despite this, people continue to trickle in wanting to participate and launch the books to the point where 25% of the 100 numbers have been taken.

The latest book to launch was one put together by Susan Heim who writes the blog Susan Heim on Parenting for Penny For Your Thoughts Book #6.

Susan’s interest in launching a book was not in the artistic portion of creating a book which has dominated the books up to this point, but the writing part. She chose to launch a book already ready to go which features author Charlotte Brontë’s signature embossed on the front, along with an excerpt from her famous novel, Jane Eyre, reproduced in her own handwriting.

Jane Eyre penny book

Her plan is to include her favorite “writer’s quotes” and pass the book on to other writers to fill in the pages. I think it’s a wonderful idea and will give a new twist on what others can do with their books if they choose to participate. I can’t wait to see how this book ends up being filled when it finally arrives back to me.

If you would like to launch a book of your own, please contact me and I will get you a number. There are also a lot of other ways that you can participate whether you are artistic or not.
