National Frozen Food Month

I can pretty much guarantee that I would have gone through my entire life never realizing that March is National Frozen Food month had I not decided to begin Penny Experiment. But since I did begin this, I do now know this fact and as a result, there are great deals on frozen food in March when using coupons.

Safeway is offering a $10 catalina (a discount for you next purchase on anything you want to buy that comes out of the register with your receipt) for every $25 worth of participating frozen food that you purchase during March. Since I was planning to make a trip to the food bank today and lack freezer space, I decided to give the discount a try. It worked out well:

To make the catalina work, I needed to make 3 separate trips through the grocery line and then another two to redeem rain checks I had gotten for Corn Flakes when they were on sale for $0.99 a box. Those 5 trips through the grocery line netted $175.22 worth of food for $10.26 — an 94% savings. This is how I was able to do it:

Now, I was able to do this at such a great discount because I had a few coupons for free Bertolli meals (a $6.99 value) that not the average person can get. That being said, anyone can still get all these for 80% + off by purchasing foods that are participating which have online coupons available. Basically I mixed and matched these 3 items:

Pillsbury Strudel ($1 off online coupon)
Yoplait Frozen Smoothiest ($1 off online coupon)
Smuckers Uncrustables ($1 off online coupon)

The first trip through I purchased five Pillsbury Strudel @2.50 each, two Yoplait Frozen Smoothiest @3.00 each and 1 Bertolli frozen meal @$6.99. This total came to $25.49 putting me over the $25 minimum to get the $10 catalina back. I then used five $1 off coupons for the Pillsbury Strudel, two $1 off coupons for the Yoplait Frozen Smoothiest and the free coupon for the bertolli frozen meal. These manufacturer coupons brought the price down to $11.50. I then used a $10.00 catalina I already had to bring the price paid out of pocket to $1.50 (most people would have to pay $11.50 out of pocket for this first transaction). With my receipt, I also received another coupon for $10.00 off my next purchase. I put these in the car and then went back to the frozen food section:

Saving My Sanity One Coupon At A Time Makes Food Donation

As I mentioned earlier today, one of the most gratifying parts of Penny Experiment is when couponers make a food bank delivery. It truly is the culmination of work done by so many people in small steps, but shows that with creativity and effort, even small amounts of money (like a penny) can do a lot of good.

DJ, who writes the blog Saving My Sanity, One Coupon at a Time, recently made her trip to Helping Hands (her local food bank) to deliver 47 pounds of food she had purchased for Penny Experiment:

Feeding Four Makes A Food Donation

One of the most gratifying parts of Penny Experiment is when couponers email me to let me know that they have made a food bank delivery of all the food they have purchased. It means that all those that have put forth an effort and made a contribution to Penny Experiment with their time and skills have had a direct impact on the lives of some people that are currently experiencing difficult times. It is what Penny Experiment is all about.

Keli from Feeding Four took a trip to the Fulton County Food Basket to deliver the food she had accumulated over three weeks:

Learning The CVS Coupon System For Free Food

I decided this past week that I needed to be more than a cereal king when it comes to couponing. I had been resisting learning how the whole CVS drug store system works because it looked rather complicated and it seemed most of the deals were for non food items which wouldn’t help the Penny Experiment goal.

It took a few hours of reading (and rereading) to where I felt I finally had a good graspe of how the CVS system works and immediately understood why so many couponers love to shop at this store. Basically, it is quite possible to earn money shopping there if you pick what you buy carefully. While most of these deals are not on food items, they can be turned into low cost / free food with a little creativity.

My first shopping trip was to actually get some things I needed to buy for myself to test if I truly understood the system and to gain my confidence. I wasn’t planning to do any shopping for Penny Experiment since I was going to use all the purchases myself. When I had what I wanted, I realized the total came to about $16 and I had a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $20 or more. It was a no brainer – I could basically buy $5 worth of food for Penny Experiment for free and this is what I got:
