115 More Boxes of Cereal Bought & Donated

Safeway continued to have their deal on Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles where you can purchase 5 boxes for $1.50 using coupons from the 3/14 Smartsource newspaper insert (each box was $1.50 when you bought 5, or $7.50. The coupons form the insert reduced the price by $2.00 so the cost was $5.50 and you received a $4.00 catalina coupon which I still had from the previous purchases to bring the price down to $1.50). This makes for a 92% discount on the cereal.

Since I had a pile of these inserts I had collected, I called the Milpitas Food Pantry to ask Karen if she interested in them since they are sugar cereals. Karen said she would be happy to get her hands on anything she could get so I went this morning and bought the boxes I could which ended up being 115 before I ran out of coupons (Karen said that those boxes won’t even last a week). I was able to get $435.85 worth of food for $34.50.

I ended up getting done early enough to make a trip to the food bank and deliver them as well (I still have the food from the previous trip which I will take to another food bank next week). I did this so I could avoid unloading and reloading the car:

Another Call For Artist

I have some people that have cancelled out on making Penny Experiment postcard art, so I need to find some artists that would be willing to fill in and take their place. If you are an artist and would like to contribute to this project in return for some publicity for your blog and possibly some other media mentions, please email me at [email protected] to get more information and a number.

The size of the art should be somewhere between 3 inches x 5 inches and 5 inches x 8 inches (a small to large postcard) on postcard type material incorporating both a real penny and the number that you are given. The style, color scheme, etc will be completely up to you.

Please leave a comment with any questions that you may have.

More 90%+ Savings Deals

Deals have been pretty sparse the last couple of weeks, but I did manage to pick up nearly $500 worth of food for just under $40 yesterday. The exact amount was $494.78 worth of food for $39.01 which was a savings of 92%.

I picked up 25 boxes of Quaker Instant Oatmeal for which was a surprise find. I was picking up some things we forgot for a BBQ and went to Lucky supermarket since it is the closest to my house. I don’t usually shop there for Penny Experiment because it doesn’t seem to have as many deals as Safeway. While picking up the BBQ stuff, noticed that Quaker Instant Oatmeal was on sale for $1.99 a box, or $1.39 each if you purchased 5 boxes. I then noticed that some of the boxes on display had $1 off coupons stuck on them making each box $0.39 (they are regularly $4.99 a box). The 25 boxes I purchased were worth $124.75 for which I paid $9.75:

Pineapple For Free

I had to make a quick trip to Safeway to use some coupons that I had collected over the last couple of weeks for free food that were going to expire. The problem was that I didn’t have any time to get back home to go through the coupons I had and figure out the best deals. So I went couponless and wandered the aisles looking for the best non coupon deal.

My search made it clear that you should always check the expiration date on cans of food before buying them. I loaded up my basket with a bunch of canned beans that were on sale. When I checked the expiration date, I found that all of them were expired including a couple that expired in 2008 (seriously). I took them to customer service and told them they really needed to go through their can good section (even worse, the manager didn’t even seem that concerned).

I finally settled on 11 cans of Dole Pineapple slices (all of which weren’t expired to my relief) and managed to purchase $27.39 worth of food for free:
