Inspiration / About the Art: When first contemplating the project for Penny Experiment during its infancy, I was thinking in terms of how many pounds of food could possibly be purchased with a penny multiplied out into a million dollars. Pounds of food equated out in my brain to the standard avoirdupois system of 16 ounces to the pound.

I chose to feature a Native American theme on a penny by attempting to depict the Indian Head Penny. The year number 1916 was chosen to repeat the #16 theme, but I don’t believe that Indian Head Pennies were minted this year — I just took a bit of artistic license.

Saving for vacations and rolling coins to do so was a favorite family pastime as a child and I’m an avid “picker upper” of coins (learned from my native grandfather who so often found money that it became a family joke and instilled the practice to always watch for money on the ground), so this project really jives with my beliefs that waste is simply a resource out of place. Penny Experiment also relates to my other personal food / hunger initiatives and activities, and the project just called for me to participate. If you were hungry, I’d share a part of my cookie with you! Found money is good money and spends like any other.

Significance of the Number: Wanting to assist in this great cause, the phrase “In for a Penny, In for a Pound: jumped into my head, so the number 16 became my number of choice.
