I met with Conna Craig at a coffee shop yesterday evening and we did the exchange of the original penny for $10 over a cup of coffee.

She is doing some wonderful work helping foster care kids and it was interesting learning about her story. If you have any interest in this area, it would be well worth your time following her on twitter.

Now that the $10 is in hand, I will be exchanging it for 1000 pennies which will be used for the current Penny Experiment art project and other projects that have not yet been determined.

Penny Experiment Original Penny

Just before I was going to meet Conna Craig who agreed to purchase the original penny for $10, I realized that if I simply handed her the penny that there would be no way to distinguish it from any other 1968 penny out there. Although it wasn’t pretty, I attached it to one of my old business cards so that there is no doubt that it is the original Penny Experiment penny if there is ever the need in the future.

Now off to the meeting to exchange the penny for the $10.

Coupons Needed: The Coupon Strategy

While adding value to pennies and selling them is a good baby step to get the Penny Experiment started, this approach alone will make it difficult to reach the goal of $1 million in food for food banks. Just as I needed to add value to the pennies and the leverage that to raise money to spend on food, I will also need to leverage each and every dollar I spend to get the most that I can from each.

In other words, I would need to raise $1 million if I went and purchased all the food at retail prices. If I shop smart and buy the food when it goes on sale, I might be able to buy the food for half price meaning that I would only need to raise $500,000 to purchase $1 million in food. If I use coupons in addition to sale prices, I may be able to save even more money meaning I can reach the goal of purchasing $1 million worth of food for far less.

The problem is that I’m not really a coupon expert. I know some of the basic strategies because of my personal finance writing, but I have never used coupons, sales and rebates to significantly reduce the cost of food. To increase the chances of Penny Experiment succeeding, that is something that I will have to do.

I have asked Flash who writes the Grocery Coupon Guide blog to help teach me how to purchase food for pennies on the dollar. My hope is to get anywhere from $5 to $10 worth of food for every $1 I spend at the store.

To be able to take the best advantage of the deals out there, I need to have coupons to do so. The more I have, the more deals I will be able to take advantage of. I am already picking up coupons left and right at every opportunity I have, but the more coupons I can get, the better chance I will be able to take advantage of grocery store sales to reduce the amount that the food costs, and ultimately the more I can give to the food bank for every dollar I spend.

I have a big request for anyone that feels that Penny Experiment is worthwhile. If you have coupons that you are not going to use, could you please send them to me instead of throwing them away? Any and all coupons are welcome and I will use as many as I can to leverage every dollar I spend. Please also tell anyone else that you know who might be able to help out. It would be greatly appreciated.

Even better, any coupon that I don’t use will still not go to waste. All coupons that I can’t use for this project I will send overseas so that military families can use them.

If you have coupons that you don’t need and are willing to send them to help out the Penny Experiment, please send them to:

Thank you for taking the time to read this far and your consideration of my request. Feel free to ask any questions or leave any comments you may have.

If you know anyone who is artistic, please let them know about this project.

While there is still a long, long way to go in this project, I want to take a second to thank everyone that has taken the time to help up until this point. The entire project has progressed much quicker than I had ever imagined it would. This has been due to all of your word of mouth efforts at letting others know about the penny Experiment. I hope all of you will continue to find this project worthwhile enough to continue to do so.

Five more artists have committed to help out with the Penny Experiment:

A Call For All Artists

All numbers for the 100 Artist Penny Postcard Series have been taken, but you can still participate. I’m currently looking for artists to launch “Penny For Your Thoughts” books.

There will also likely be other art projects in the future, so please sign-up for the rss feed, follow on twitter or become a fan on facebook. There also may be some cancellations. If you want to be considered if there is a cancellation, please email me.

That penny that others thought was worthless has a buyer who decided that my 10 reasons why this penny is worth $10 were just too good to pass up. The penny was purchased by Conna Craig who is a researcher and writer on foster care and adoption.

Conna actually lives in an area fairly close to where I will be in another two weeks, so we have decided to do the transaction in person in early December instead of through the mail with photos — and maybe even a video. Those I will post when they are available.

That means that the penny experiment has $10 to work with and it’s time to move onto the next stage:

I’m looking for artists that would be willing to donate a bit of their time and talent for the penny experiment project. What I’m hoping to find is 100 different artists who will each create one postcard size piece of art that incorporates a number of their choosing (between 1 and 100) and a penny. In return, the artist will get (if desired) a bio on this website under the image of their artwork, a link to their own website and the knowledge that they helped out a lot of people in need during these difficult economic times.

The size of the art should be somewhere between 3 inches x 5 inches and 5 inches x 8 inches (a small to large postcard) on postcard type material incorporating both a real penny and the number that you choose. The style, color scheme, etc is completely up to you.

The art will be sold with 100% of the money going to purchase food for food banks. If this sounds like something in which you would like to participate, please contact me with five (5) numbers in order of preference that you would like to use for your art (you will only use one of these numbers, but this will allow me to assign one if some have already been taken). Please also feel free to contact me or leave a comment with any questions that you may have.

10 Reasons This Penny Is Worth $10

Unlike the teenagers that believed that this penny was worthless, the truth is that it does have value including a tremendous amount of potential value for those with a keen eye. To get this project rolling, the original penny I found is being sold for $10. Before you scoff, let me give you 10 reasons why this penny is worth $10:

penny

penny tails

10. It’s the giving time of year.

9. You can claim superior foresight over your friends in finding unique ways to help those in need.

8. No Sunday morning hangover because beer money went to a good cause.

7. Link love (if you own a website) mentions for being the first to help in this project.

6. Fantastic marketing opportunity when stories about this project hit the press and they want to talk to the first person to participate in it.

5. Elevated Karma

4. You’ll make big bucks when the goal is reached and you sell the original penny on eBay.

3. You can bask in the “coolness factor” when you tell all your friends that you were the first to recognize what a great cause this is.

2. Good luck for you! (It was found heads up)

And the number one reason that this penny is worth $10:

1. It’s not one of those crappy copper-coated zinc wussy pennies.

If those reasons make sense to you and you want to participate in this penny experiment project, email me.
