The Mall of Fan — DJG

Inspiration: The Fall of Man, Uncle Sam, America, Basketball

About the Art: Money, Man, America, Manmade Goods as Gods (It’s fairly self-explanatory)

Significance of the Number: My age at the time of the card’s creation matches the card number given to me. I placed my thumb print below the number to further emphasize this as well as ideas of manmade possessions and the ability to be tracked down and owned. Also, the number is applied to the character’s chest in a manner like a basketball jersey number, without the jersey though…the character’s action kind of resembles a basketball player, which happened by accident, but is very welcomed.

Materials: Thin cardboard, pens, markers, penny, glue, cutting blade. Sketched with pencil and used cutting blade for final drawing by peeling back a layer of cardboard on certain areas. The rubber stamp “Remove Before Use” was previously applied to the cardboard as it was once the backing used for packaging t-shirts and I worked around this to incorporate it in the art.

Size: 6 inches x 8 inches

About the Artist: Born to Missouri farmers during a late 1970s blizzard, DJG (aka: Danny J. Gibson, DJG Design, Dee Jay Gee or DJGKCMOUSA) is a critically acclaimed and prolific visual artist based in Kansas City, MO USA since 2002. Earliest influences include the apple on records by The Beatles, farming logos, sports team mascots, animals, movies, graffiti, handmade things, comic books, Jim Henson, ’80s culture and architecture. Mixing all that with a current state of context, DJG has been compared to in artistic dialogue, outlook and elusive (at times reclusive) work ethic, as well as feelings of personal kinship and spirit, to artists such as Ray Johnson, Henryk Tomaszewski, Ivan Chermayeff, Lester Beall, James Castle, Saul Steinberg, Edward Gorey, Seymour Chwast, Bill Traylor and Henry Darger…

Guided by deft eyes and hands at the respected school of design at Southwest MO State University (aka: Missouri State), DJG left studies prematurely to gather steady attention in the independent music art community for many years. Currently taking a significant step aside from music graphics to combine the present day-to-day of where the heart makes it with the gut in a constant stream of personal projects and selected commission work, DJG is simply making things in a variety of ways and enjoyment in a cramped basement beneath the heartland of America. Aside from art and intertwined within, DJG has labored as a farmhand, house painter, groundskeeper, janitor, mental health and office servant and also known to travel a bit, read and write a lot, shoot tons of photographs and watch many movies…

Honored and fortunate, DJG has received prizes, recognition, publication and exhibition internationally (North America, Europe, Asia, Eurasia…) in the visual and graphic arts, typography, writing, sculpture, film making and photography. Such notables include: Type Directors Club, Print Magazine, Step Inside Design, AIGA, Creative Grab Bag, 1,000 Music Graphics, 1,000 Supreme CDs, The Typed Image, The Anatomy of Design, The Little Book of Creativity, Pitch’s Best Posters in Kansas City, University of California at Davis, Baton Rouge Art Gallery, Sacramento Fine Arts Center, Missouri State Fair, Missouri State Capital, National Public Radio, Frankfurt Germany Book Fair, Grafik Tasarim Turkey and DPI Taiwan…

To see and learn more about DJG’s artwork, you can explore his website DJD Design, view his Flickr page and follow him on twitter @DJGKCMOUSA.
Inspiration / About the Art: I was inspired by the Penny Experiment as a whole. I have found that many people will talk about doing something to help others, but often don’t actually follow through with it. Penny Experiment has shown us what it means to “Walk the Walk” — not just “Talk the Talk.” Putting your money where your mouth is can come in the shape of not only monetary means, but time and energy as well.

Significance of the Number: The number was randomly assigned. I wanted a numbers that others weren’t taking. I knew I could do something with any number.

Materials: The piece was created by transferring a design of mine using a process that involves an ink jet transparency onto a piece of thick textured watercolor paper. I then sketched out my design and used artist’s markers to form the face/number design.

Size: 5 inches x 5 inches

About the Artist: Stacy Beck has had her work displayed in many galleries, her local art museum in Delray Beach, Florida, she has been featured on HGTV’s Dear Genevieve and had her artwork used in various advertising campaigns. Her work has also been featured on many blogs and she sells her photographs and designs as stock photography. Stacy often sells her work under the name Citrus Tree Designs.

Stacy thinks of herself more as a photographer rather than a graphic designer, but she loves anything that has to do with design. Her art and her photography reflect her love of color and light. She comes from a long line of artists and she’s currently working on a Masters degree in Fine Art. She loves her work and she feels privileged to be able to be a part of this worthy experiment.

To see and learn more about Stacy’s artwork, you can explore her blog Citrus Tree Design blog and Citrus Tree Design Website. Stacy is also involved in designing children’s clothing.

Power — Sheila Estep

Inspiration / About the Art: My inspiration of this piece was that I wanted to give “Power” to the project because I believe in it and see great service in feeding the hungry. If all of us stepped into our “Power” and did something for Humanity, what would life be like today?

When thinking of ideas of what to do, I saw an ad that showed a powerful gladiator who was ready to do battle. The energy he projected was intense, and I liked the idea of using him as a symbol of power that I wanted to give the experiment to successfully reach its goal.

Significance of the Number: I received # 34 randomly, but the Universe happily sends messages to our soul. This number describes where I’m at on my path and it’s a confirmation that things aren’t as random as we tend to believe.

Looking up the #34 on the Internet, it says “The number 34 bestows spiritual wisdom through careful observation of people and things, and worldly success by learning through experience.

Reduced to a single entity 7, (3+4=7) this vibrates to the planet Neptune. It represents spirituality, sensitivity, sympathy and mystery. 7 is the number of illusion and delusion, sometimes deception but also the number of healing and miracles, faith and dreams that do come true.

If you are influenced by the number 34, 25, or 7, you tend to have remarkable dreams. Secretly, you have an intense interest in esoteric mysteries, mythology, the unknown etc. Often, your mere presence has a soothing effect on a troubled person. The 7 vibration is associated with peculiar ideas about religion, a dislike of following the beaten path and a tendency to adopt political beliefs which are unique and somewhat non-orthodox.”

Materials: Watercolor and Pencil on Watercolor paper

Size: 4 inches x 6 inches

About the Artist: Sheila Estep is a self taught artist who retired after 20 years in the Information Technology industry. She has always been passionate about the visual arts throughout life, but never picking up a paintbrush till 2008. After taking a watercolor class in 2008, she was hooked and felt challenged by the techniques of harnessing the power creation through water. Sheila continues today enjoying the creativity and success through this medium and hopes her paintings will invoke an emotional response in the viewer. She is a member of the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society.

To see and learn more about Sheila’s artwork, you can explore her blog Water Color Muse.

Inspiration / About the Art: In early 2009, I lived in a squat comprised of two mansions side-by-side on Park Lane in London along with about thirty other people. We had a great time there and even threw a huge party with a DJ on each floor of the six-story mansion. Unfortunately, since we were in Mayfair, we were discovered quickly and made the front page of the newspapers in addition to receiving a court order.

During the madness and press coverage, a Russian guy who claimed to own the building offered to sell it to us for one penny. Not only did we take him up on his offer, we asked him to represent us in court. He claimed to be “an ambassador from the white Kingdom of Heaven” and said that “God owns all property, and therefore as His ambassador I can sell these mansions to the squatters for one penny.” The judge was not amused and we were evicted hours later. It turns out that the Duke of Westminster, one of the richest men in the UK, owned the building.

To this day, the buildings sit empty. I’m not sure the Duke is ever coming back. The most striking element of this story to me is the juxtaposition of a multi-billionaire aristocrat and a friend of mine who “spent less than a two pence over Christmas”. Is there really a reason for people to be homeless when there are literally thousands of empty buildings?

Significance of the Number: The buildings I squatted in were numbers 94 and 95.

Materials: Ink on water color paper.

Size: 5 inches x 7 inches

Inspiration / About the Art: I asked that a number randomly be assigned to me, as I enjoy the challenge of having to create “around” a subject on smaller projects of this sort. I was assigned #63. In a brief scoot around the Internet, I found that 63 CE was the year that Pompeii suffered a rather catastrophic earthquake — seventeen years prior to its final decimation in 79 CE. Having been a wanna-be archaeologist since early childhood, I opted to somehow work with the Pompeii theme; I must admit I’d been previously unaware of the earthquake there in 63 CE, and was intrigued by the notion that so many fled Pompeii at the time, leaving the survivors behind to rebuild the city, only to see its final annihilation in 79 CE.

In keeping with this, and having a penchant for darker matters in life, I wondered how many personal and social, small and global, catastrophes would/could be averted if we paid heed to warnings of impending disaster. On the flip side, paying too much attention to such “signs” would almost necessitate a life lived in fear and steeped in superstition. As with so many questions, it’s simply open-ended in my mind. I enjoy contemplating both sides of the proverbial coin… conclusions and/or decisions are secondary and often unnecessary.

Materials: Sculpey, penny, well-worn human figures I’ve used as stencils of sorts in other pieces, acrylic, gold and copper leaf, paper, ashes.

Size: 6 inches by 8 inches

About the Artist: Cayenne lives in San Diego, California. She has a degree in Philosophy, although her work has always been numbers-based corporate fare. Her passion has always been the act of creating with her creative path having been through many transformations over the years — from airbrushing textiles, to jewelry-making, to glass painting. She finally made the leap to primarily creating on canvas in December, 2005, at the ripe “old” age of 36.

I have some people that have cancelled out on making Penny Experiment postcard art, so I need to find some artists that would be willing to fill in and take their place. If you are an artist and would like to contribute to this project in return for some publicity for your blog and possibly some other media mentions, please email me at info@savingadvice.com to get more information and a number.

The size of the art should be somewhere between 3 inches x 5 inches and 5 inches x 8 inches (a small to large postcard) on postcard type material incorporating both a real penny and the number that you are given. The style, color scheme, etc will be completely up to you.

Please leave a comment with any questions that you may have.

Inspiration / About the Art: This photo was taken in a small town in Northern Italy. While we walked through the town, I looked up and saw the architecture, windows and clotheslines of these homes and knew this would be a great shot. Most of my work highlights people in their own culture.

Significance of the Number: There is no specific significance to 10 except that it’s the first double digit number — something that inspired me.

Materials: I used a Nikon camera and Photoshop for this piece

Size: 3 inches by 5 inches

About the Artist: Kim Willis is a creative soul with a passion for people, and she feels that the best way for her to combine both is through photography. Photography runs through her family and she has been around it her own life including the last five years as a professional photographer.
